About

The Black Development Agency (BDA)  was established in 1992. This was following recommendations from the Black Voluntary Sector Strategy to address the needs of Bristol’s Black and Minority Ethnic Voluntary Sector. The role of BDA in the provision of information, advice and advocacy service, research facilities and training, targeted at BME groups in Bristol was established.

BDA’s elected Board of Trustees manages its business.The Board is elected at an Annual General Meeting and comprises 15 representatives from member BME voluntary/community organisations.BDA has a membership of approximately 250 BME voluntary/community organisations.

As the only BME led Council for Voluntary Services (CVS) in the United Kingdom, BDA delivers the following range of services:

* Capacity Building/Community Development
* Information, Advice & Support
* Advocacy
* Participation & Representation
* Funding & Training

BDA has developed considerable experience and a positive reputation for working in real partnership with local people, promoting community involvement and self help. Integral to this has been an increased acknowledgement of the Agency’s role in working with statutory agencies, mainstream voluntary organisations and cross-sector partnerships within Bristol and across the South West. The Agency, through its networks, consultative forums and membership meetings have been given a clear mandate as a representational body by the BME VCS in Bristol.
